A1 Scotch Corner Pier Replacements
The pier replacement programme to the A1/A66 interchange at Scotch Corner was carried out by OSC in conjunction with Alfred McAlpine Project Services.
The Contract entailed OSC installing reinforced concrete beams, later incorporated into the permanent works, to receive the jacking equipment used to lift the existing decks clear, by 3mm, of the redundant trestle piers.
These piers were dismantled, then OSC set about constructing the new solid section piers, first to the central reserve, north and south bridges, and then the four verge piers.
The proximity of the supporting temporary works made insertion of the pier formwork problematic, however, OSC designed and had manufactured a special piece of plant which worked wonderfully well, and will be of great benefit on future works of this nature.
