Sunderland Southern Radial Route

The SSRR which is a new road from Hendon, links up with the A19, south of Ryhope and runs alongside, for the most part, the Sunderland to Middlesbrough permanent way.

This road runs over and under the railway track, with over and under bridges as required. OSC was contracted, by Birse Civils, to construct 350 metres of reinforced concrete retaining walls along with underpasses which provides pedestrian access, under the new road and railway, to Hendon and Ryhope beaches.

The ‘fair face’ finish achieved to the retaining wall is in full view for its entire length from road and rail travellers.
